I never fuck with DJs. There’s a simple reason: they are way cooler than me, and damn if I don’t feel like they have the power to make or break me (musically). But a boy can dream right?
We chose these songs because they are the ones that have inspired us to try to go harder and deeper and grittier with our music. Each song on here has a certain swagger to it, an intensity and a not-giving-a-fuckness that sets them apart. And beyond that—I can remember the first time I heard all these tracks, and the first time I played them for my friends and I so very briefly felt like maybe, just maybe, I was as cool as the DJ we were going to see later that night. And that’s a special feeling.
The best kind of dance music inhabits you, and before you know it’s part of your DNA. They all contain elements that we’ve taken for ourselves and tried to run with in our own way. And these songs are what make it possible for us to take a pretty song like the piano (original!) version of ”Dissembler“ at the end of this mix tape and turn it into a dance floor banger.
Enjoy—picture us with scrunched up faces, bobbing our heads almost down to the ground like monks. We hope they hit you that hard too.
